Enduro è il nome della nuova pagaia messa a punto dall’artigiano sloveno Saša Rejec, creatore del marchio Ophion Paddles. Avevo già testato la più basilare Katana Allstar glass, con cui mi sono trovato così bene da utilizzarla per più di due stagioni, cosicché non mi sono lasciato sfuggire l’occasione di provare la nuova Enduro alla prima occasione.

Saša definisce la sua ultima creazione “hybrid construction”: la pala è infatti composta di differenti materiali; a un cuore di schiuma Airex si accompagna un rivestimento in fiberglass prepreg, rinforzato sulla nervatura centrale con fibre di carbonio incrociato, per migliorare la stabilità torsionale. I margini della pala sono completati da un bordo di dynel che ne aumenta la resistenza ai colpi e all’usura. Come la Katana anche la Enduro ha un profilo marcatamente diedrale con una costola centrale che divide la generosa superficie della pala (750 cm2). La forma è a goccia arrotondata, evoluzione della classica kinetic. La nuova pagaia è disponibile sia con manico in fiberglass sia in carbonio, dritto, neutral bend e power torque, fisso o regolabile. L’angolo è personalizzabile a piacere. Il modello scelto per questa prova è il più semplice: manico diritto e fisso in fiberglass, che, dal mio punto di vista rappresenta la soluzione migliore per riverrunning e creeking, elastico e robusto.

Dai primi colpi in acqua questa pagaia restituisce una sensazione di sicurezza, potenza e facilità di utilizzo. La presa in acqua è estremamente stabile ed efficace, senza tremolii e fastidiose fluttuazioni, anche nelle turbolenze; ingresso estrazione e sfilate in acqua sempre fluide, neutre e naturali. Nel modello testato, poiché le pale non sono anticipate e il manico è dritto, è praticamente nulla la tendenza a “cadere in avanti”, ossia a girare nelle mani, quando si allenta la presa, trascinata dal peso disassato delle pale, tendenza che si rileva invece in svariati attrezzi con pale o manici anticipati. La generosa dimensione delle pale garantisce colpi potenti ed efficaci, ma grazie al manico in fiberglass si riesce a tirare senza sforzo eccessivo, limitando i dolori tendinei e muscolari (parlo per i vecchietti come il sottoscritto). Naturalmente anche la portanza negli appoggi e nell’eskimo è ottima, quest’ultimo poi è agevolato dal comportamento neutro e intuitivo della pala in acqua. Molto efficaci anche le retropagaiate, cosa che la rende adatta anche al play e ai torrenti tecnici e molto manovrieri. Il bordo in dynel mi è parso decisamente resistente e dovrebbe contribuire a limitare decisamente il consumo della pala, che rappresenta il principale problema delle pagaie in fiberglass. La resistenza all’usura la potrò verificare solo dopo un certo tempo di utilizzo, ma la mia Katana, dopo più di due stagioni è ancora in condizioni perfette, fatto salvo per il consumo dei bordi a cui si accennava.

In conclusione un attrezzo costruito con cura artigianale, intuitivo e di facile utilizzo, molto valido e dal prezzo non esorbitante, considerata la tecnologia impiegata.

Enduro is the name of the new paddle developed by Slovenian craftsman Saša Rejec, creator of the Ophion Paddles brand. I had already tested the more basic Katana Allstar glass, with which I felt so good that I used it for more than two seasons, so I didn’t miss the opportunity to try the new Enduro at the first opportunity.

Saša defines his latest creation as “hybrid construction”: the blade is in fact made of different materials; a core of Airex foam is accompanied by a prepreg fiberglass coating, reinforced on the central rib with crossed carbon fibers, to improve torsional stability. The edges of the blade are completed by a dynel edge which increases its resistance to blows and wear. Like the Katana, the Enduro also has a markedly dihedral profile with a central rib that divides the generous surface of the blade (750 cm2). The shape is a rounded drop, an evolution of the classic kinetic. The new paddle is available with both fiberglass and carbon handles, straight, neutral bend and power torque, fixed or adjustable. The angle can be customized as desired. The model chosen for this test is the simplest: straight and fixed fiberglass handle, which, from my point of view, represents the best solution for riverrunning and creeking, elastic and robust.

From the first strokes in the water this paddle returns a feeling of safety, power and ease of use. The grip in the water is extremely stable and effective, without tremors and annoying fluctuations, even in turbulence; entrance, extraction and movements in the water always fluid, neutral and natural. In the tested model, since the blades are not anticipated and the handle is straight, there is practically no tendency to “fall forward”, ie to turn in the hands, when the grip is loosened, dragged by the offset weight of the blades, a tendency that on the other hand, it is found in various tools with anticipated shovels or handles. The generous size of the blades guarantees powerful and effective strokes, but thanks to the fiberglass handle you can pull without excessive effort, limiting tendon and muscle pain (I speak for old people like myself). Of course also the lift in the supports and in the roll is excellent, the latter is then facilitated by the neutral and intuitive behavior of the blade in the water. The back-strokes are also very effective, which makes it also suitable for play and technical and very maneuvers creeks. The dynel edge seemed to me to be decidedly resistant and should definitely help to limit the consumption of the blade, which is the main problem of fiberglass paddles. I will be able to check the wear resistance only after a certain time of use, but my Katana, after more than two seasons, is still in perfect condition, except for the wear of the edges mentioned above.

In conclusion, a tool built with craftsmanship, intuitive and easy to use, very valid and with a not exorbitant price, considering the technology used.
